We travel because we love it. We get a huge buzz from experiencing new cultures, exciting local food and the invariably friendly people we meet wherever we go. However, we are always on a budget, being of the firm view that since we have limited time and resources available, we’d rather have 2 flashpacker trips than just one up-market trip for the same money. We like to travel safely and comfortably, but cheaply. We prefer to stay in small family-run boutique places rather than large chain hotels with hundreds of rooms. And we like to be adventurous with food, trying out local dishes wherever we go. We like to self-drive when it’s not too scary, and love to seek out unusual places to see and things to do. We love historical sites, in moderation, and are both very experienced skiers and divers.

So what is a grey flashpacker? There are a myriad of flashpacker definitions around, but we like to think that a grey flashpacker is an older and rather more discerning former backpacker with slightly more financial resources and a taste for comfort. Essentially, one who has been there—done that, as far as roughing it, camping, couch surfing and down-market digs and travel are concerned! Our essential minimum standards these days include a large comfortable bed, air conditioning, an ensuite bathroom with hot water and a good shower (and a hair drier for the OT), a decent breakfast and some real local ambience if at all possible. Desirables include a good sized swimming pool, a lively bar with an acceptable red wine and icy beer, and a good in-house restaurant if possible. Oh yes, and all at a reasonable price, please. Not too much to ask really?

We research all our travel in depth, but have discovered that most bloggers seem to be based in the Northern Hemisphere and don’t provide the particular advice and insights that we’ve been looking for as Aussies when planning our travel.

I’ve been writing a private travel blog for more than a decade. It has 1800+ photos and videos and more than 105 entries covering trips all over the globe. I’ve also been a Trip Advisor tragic for several years, writing 700+ contributions about the places we’ve been, the places we’ve stayed, the food we’ve eaten, the things we’ve seen and the wonderful people we’ve met.

It now seems about time that we shared all that with the wider grey Aussie flashpacker community — and anyone else who might be interested.

I hope you’ll enjoy this blog. Do please drop me an email if you think I can help with your travels.
